Good question.
A few other math symbols would seem to make fine
bullets, too.
In the book "Canine Crimes" (JOVE paperback, Edited by
Cynthia Manson, ©1993), math symbols are used to adorn
the titles of the individual short stories.

(Actually the two characters used in the book are 3.2
proposals at U+2A7D and U+2A7E)
Over the years many typesetters having access to math
symbol fonts may have done something similar to spruce
up the printed page. Do computer typesetters have the
option of selecting bullets or other text enhancements
from lookalike Unicode characters?
