There has been a whole gob of e-mail exchanged recently in all of this
controversy about UTF-8S. As a casual observer, I would like to take this
opportunity to point out some things.
The kind of end-user input floating around on the Unicode list is very
important and I'm sure UTC people listen to all of what you're saying,
but... Decisions in the UTC are made by members of the Unicode Consortium,
not by the bystanders here.
Votes are what counts in UTC. This is a good example of a situation where
you can take action and make a difference in the outcome of a very
controversial decision. Become enfranchised!
If you don't want to see UTF-8S become reality and your company could wind
up spending well over 12,000 dollars to work on UTF-8S support and related
headaches if it did happen, perhaps your company might be interested in
spending only 12,000 dollars now to vote against it in UTC. Almost any
little company can afford 12,000 dollars.
On the other hand, if you think there's a danger that UTF-8S will be
squashed in UTC and your company's bread & butter depends on it, you might
want to spend a mere 12,000 dollars to vote for it.
Don't just flame and whine. Get out and vote with the big dogs!
