Actually, there are some left/right-handed face distinctions that are
semantically important:

 :D is an overjoyed face, often used sarcastically ("HOORAY!")
 D: is an appalled face, also used in semi-humourous contexts.

(Of all of the possibly posts de-lurk with, this is probably the worst
subject I could've picked...)

I'm tempted to throw my opinion in on all of this, too, but I'm hardly
an authority on anything. :)
