      I think Pango's attributed
    string (
    http://developer.gnome.org/doc/API/2.0/pango/pango-Text-Attributes.html
    ) can be used for this. I believe that other layout/rendering libraries
    such as Uniscribe, ATSUI and the rendering/layout part of ICU
    have similar data type/APIs.
