The classical Nôm script of Viet Nam has begun to be encoded in the
Unicode and ISO/IEC 10646 standards, mainly through CJK Extensions A and
B. Wide use of the Nôm script on computers remain impractical due to a lack
of fonts and the inavailability of font technology to handle characters
beyond the BMP. To overcome these difficulties and to enable the
presentation of Nôm characters on existing systems, the XML-based SVG
(Scalable Vector Graphics) technology has been successfully used on the
web site: http://nomfoundation.org/unicode/lookup.php . Such application
does not require large fonts nor specialized technology on the user's system
other than the SVG browser plugin. Consequently, this technique could be
a model for making other ancient and less common scripts readily available
for exploration by an eager audience, and for the process of
standardization.
