Ah, but the Spanner I was thinking of was a spaceship from a short story by
Arthur C. Clark (or was it Azimov?). (The story tells of this ship flying
too close to a neutron star, leaving nothing but a star-mangled Spanner.)
So, these are most certainly distinct and unrelated characters.
