Just wish to add my two cents:

I am not a linguist, I am not good at English slang, but I know that word,
simply because it appears in many introductory algorithms textbooks. My
friends in computer science here in Iran use the word regularly.
'Sentinel' is not as Californian as it seems, and it is a common word to
people in computer science.
